The Cross Keys at Epperstone, was crowned Best Public House in Nottinghamshire at the Nottingham Post Food and Drink Awards 2016, on the (22nd June), just one year after opening. Trish and Des Sweeney fought off a staggering 7,000 nominations to be judged by two sets of mystery diners against 35 other restaurants, pubs, diners, cafes, bars and delis to claim the title at the glittering awards dinner at East Midlands Conference Centre, University of Nottingham. Des, a former chef to the queen, said: “To receive this award in our first year is out of this world. We have an amazing team who’ve got us this far. We fought off highly regarded competition including Larwood and Voce and Victoria Hotel Beeston which makes the award all the more special”. Hawthorn Leisure invested into the previously closed pub in June 2015, helping to turn the site into what has fast become an iconic Nottinghamshire pub.
