Leicester’s most popular Soul, Funk and RnB bar, Jukebox, see’s record numbers through the doors in its first year of opening.
St. Nicholas’ Place in the heart of the city, is home to Jukebox, Leicester’s very own soul, jazz, funk and reggae bar. The venue was set up in July last year, and owner and founder, Shane Whitfield, saw this as prime location for an establishment of its kind.He initially saw a gap in the market in Leicester, as he noticed a huge Soul Funk and R&B crowd of people ages 30-50. Shane looked to recreate a bar in Leicester, similar to that of The Jam House in Birmingham.
“I looked at a number of places for potential venues in the city but none really stood out. Then I walked past the old Rockafellas and saw it was vacant, so I did some homework on the area and realised that the people who used to go down to Braunstone Gate had moved to that end of town. That’s when I decided that it was the place to be!”
One of their biggest achievements to date was having the LCFC parade start right outside their door, which was also a great accomplishment for the city as a whole. Shane is still overwhelmed by the positive feedback Jukebox gets.
“Seeing all the people having fun and a good time is great. We’ve had many comments on our Facebook page saying how friendly the place is and how long they’ve been waiting for a place like this in Leicester.” For many of you have visited the bar on a Friday or Saturday night, you will be familiar with the spirited atmosphere along with the great live performances and DJ’s that take to the stage. on a Friday, live Soul, Funk and R&B bands perform. A great variety of local, and out-of-town acts travel to Leicester’s Jukebox. Many former A-List stars have even visited more than once, familiar acts including Alexander O’Neal, The Real Thing, and a whole host of special tribute bands. BBC favourite, Trevor Nelson has performed at jukebox three times now, and loves the reception he receives on every visit.
“When I took the call from Shane about gigging at Jukebox, I was a bit sceptical at first, but wow man, Jukebox is a killer vibe.”
Last weekend, Jukebox held their very own ‘Birthday Party’ which welcomed 610 guests in one night alone, to the venue. Now, a year on, and the reputable venue has seen over 50,000 party people through the door. Shane was pleasantly surprised by the response it has had over the past 12 months.“I didn’t anticipate that it would take off so well, and so quickly too. It’s unbelievable how quick it's actually grown. On average we have between 4-600 people every Friday and Saturday night, meaning over a thousand people every single weekend.
”All profit that has been made to date, is now being reinvested back into the club .To celebrate, Jukebox will be putting on a show stopping concert this September, labelled ‘Jukebox Reloaded’. The evening will be filled with throwback tunes and incredible acts from the 80’s and beyond. “For Jukebox Reloaded’s first year, we’re expecting numbers of around 1000. We’ve sold 400 tickets already and we’re still a couple of months away from the event. We’ve just teamed up with Smooth radio for this as well which is great.”
