The Little Mix Summer Shout Out tour came to the East Midlands much loved Donington Park this month, which my niece was overly excited about when she heard about it on Gem 106.
The girl group, made up of Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall, formed in 2011 and have become one of Britain’s biggest pop sensations since the Spice Girls. Little Mix won Best British Single for ‘Shout Out to My Ex’ this year at the Brit Awards making the Summer Shout Out tour even more memorable.
Donington Park is known for its motor racing, huge markets, and top performing acts throughout their busy calendar, and with the three-day SeptemberFest featuring artists such as Razorlight, Atomic Kitten, and Leftwing & Kody, it’s safe to say that Donington Park knows how to put on a good event for everyone.
Although the park had a vast number of guests, tickets were available right up until the very day of the concert meaning we were still able to take my mum who made a last minute decision to tag along.
The park opened at 15:00 with gates opening at 16:00, we decided to arrive at around 17:00 just in time to see support acts Ella Eyre and Sheppard perform. Parking was surprisingly easy at just £5 for the day. The steady flow of traffic meant no stop/starting to get in and no stressed parents! There is a slight walk to the tarmacked arena of around 10-15 minutes (depending on how eager your Little Mix fans are to get there!), but this walk just makes it all the more exciting as you’re surrounded by like-minded fans adorned in glitter, cute hairstyles and Converse.
Despite the flurry of crowds, there is no waiting time to get through the gates and staff were super friendly and helpful, as well as encouraging you to have a great time once you’re in. There are also toilets available just before the gates for anyone needing them after the drive.
Once in, the place is buzzing with small children excited to see their role models all the way through to teens and the older generation who enjoy the odd pop hit and seeing their younger ones beam with delight.
There was no end of street food vendors selling everything you could possibly from jacket potatoes to noodles and everything in between including gourmet pizza, fish and chips, and donuts – and prices were pleasantly average. The vendors took little advantage of their captive market and sold their fare at competitive prices meaning you could spend between £5 and £15 (most payable by card) on one meal depending on your tastes. There were also four stalls that offered gluten free options too. The queues were longer for some vendors than others and although at these you may be waiting in a queue for longer than you’d like, it is worth it especially while you’re able to listen to the supporting acts. It is worth bringing a picnic blanket as there is no seating provided and it really makes for a community-type feel sitting with all the other fans while you wait and eat.
Official merchandise was available throughout the park selling lanyards, t-shirts, hoodies and more, and queues were handled very efficiently so you’re not stuck waiting around before the main event!
The crowds went wild at around 20:00 when Little Mix paraded onto the stage with their magnificent girl power appeal. The sound travelled through the air into the hearts of a thousand fans and even those who were simply there to accompany little ones seemed emotional from the dramatic stage and sound. Although a crowd gathered around the stage, it was possible to break through to the front and from outside, the girls were still visible and fantastic to watch and sing along to.
Once Little Mix said their goodbyes, many ran for the car park while others went for more food. On our way to the car park the attendants standing at points throughout our walk back were energetic and clearly loved seeing that everyone had such a great time. Every one of them had a big smile on their face and waved every now and then, some even posing for a photo and a chat with the guests.
Donington Park presented a brilliant arena with every facility and amenity you could need to look after you so that you can fully enjoy your favourite artist. The event was a definite highlight of our summer!
