With the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) coming into force in May 2018, Leicester-based marketing agency, Rock Kitchen Harris, in partnership with independent law firm, Spearing Waite, has given businesses from around the Midlands an informative and well received presentation on how the new regulation will impact businesses.
The seminar provided an opportunity for brands to find out more about the new regulation from a legal and marketing viewpoint, understand the risks of being non-compliant, the significant fines that might be incurred, as well as the best ways to approach GDPR.
Helping delegates understand the impact of GDPR, associate director at Rock Kitchen Harris, Ian Moore, offered practical guidance from a marketing perspective on how to take important steps towards compliance. Talking them through the key legal changes to data protection law, head of commercial at Spearing Waite, Ian Thomson, explained what it means for businesses in practical terms.
Commenting on the seminar, Ian Moore said: “GDPR has gone under the radar for many businesses since it was announced and has a potentially huge impact on marketing. Whilst achieving compliance is undoubtedly daunting for many, achieving this can lead to more relevant communication and a happier audience, so we’ve been keen to promote the benefits too.”
Ian Thomson added “The GDPR will obviously add to the compliance burden. However, I am confident that as organisations receive expert advice and explore compliance that they’ll find the rules are clearer and easier to understand than previously defined.”
With many businesses and organisations unsure how the new regulation will impact them, the seminar gave delegates the opportunity to understand the implications around GDPR as Erika Hardy, head of marketing at Everards Brewery confirms: “Keeping in touch with our customers is key to the business, so understanding how best to achieve this within the new regulation and the opportunities to deliver even more relevant messages has been incredibly useful.”
To help businesses audit their data and ensure that they are compliant before the new regulation comes into force in May next year, Rock Kitchen Harris and Spearing Waite will be putting together a checklist of actions that you will be able to download in the next couple of weeks at rkh.co.uk.
