Nuffield Health Leicester Hospital – Launch New Bariatric Service

Due to the growing demand for weight loss surgery Nuffield Health is launching its own Bariatric (weight loss) treatment pathway in Leicester. The pathway links treatment at its Leicester Hospital with its flagship Recovery Plus programme at Nuffield Health Leicester Fitness and Wellbeing Gym.

Obesity rates in the UK are the highest in Europe and have increased dramatically over the past few years to such an extent that in excess of 20% of the population are now obese and the costs to the UK economy exceeds £3 billion per year.

Poor diet and lifestyle are now translating into our daily lives with about 30,000 deaths a year in the UK being attributed to obesity. 9,000 of those deaths are occurring before retirement age, pressurising the NHS and the UK’s healthcare systems.

“Being overweight or obese increases the risk of many serious illnesses, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Further a BMI of 30 to 35 has been found to reduce life expectancy by an average of three years, whilst a BMI of over 40 reduced longevity by eight to ten years. This is comparable to a lifetime of smoking. As a society, we are gradually realising that obesity poses just as serious a health threat as smoking” says Chris Sutton, Consultant Bariatric Specialist at Nuffield Health.

Further, recent research has identified that obesity is also attributed as a cause of 13 types of cancer, including cancers of the bowel, breast and kidney, and results suggest one in 20 diagnoses could be prevented by maintaining a healthy weight………Source: Cancer Research UK
