Leicestershire hair mogul Barrie Stephen has been named as a finalist at the National Hairdressers' Federation Business Awards 2018. His work raising money for the Woodside RSPCA Animal Shelter is being recognised as Barrie makes the shortlist for the Community Support award.
As well as a passion for hair, Barrie Stephen cares deeply about animal welfare. A lifelong supporter of the Woodside RSPCA Animal Shelter, and the owner of two black Labradors and four cats, Barrie was approached by the organisation in 2014 and asked to be an Ambassador for the RSPCA Woodside Animal Shelter in Leicester.
To celebrate this honour, Barrie launched Project Woodside to raise much needed funds for the charity. The whole Barrie Stephen Hair team has got on board with this commitment and a whole host of charity events and community interventions have taken place to support the cause. Now the Barrie Barometer stands at an impressive £27,504.75! This equates to a massive difference in the equivalent of animal care in Leicestershire. For example, £50 equips an inspector’s van with animal first aid kit, pet carrier and animal-catching set, while total costs of the care of each stray or abandoned dog can run to £500 or more. Woodside Animal Shelter is an independently funded branch of the RSPCA which does not receive support from government or the central RSPCA so they are dependent on businesses and individuals raising funds and awareness for them.
Barrie undertakes a range of activities that the whole team in his five salons get involved with, and they don’t all involve direct fundraising. For example, on the last day before finishing for Christmas 2017, every single member of Barrie Stephen Hair staff brought in a donation of pet food to gift to the shelter to help support the animals and the centre’s running costs over a very cold and difficult festive period. They also work with local businesses to put on charity balls and dinners. The fantastic support from local restaurants and venues like North Bar & Kitchen and the White Peacock in providing free hire is invaluable to the cause, while local media outlets like Niche and Dluxe magazine are extremely supportive in helping to raise awareness of the events. As well as helping with the organisation of the charity events, lots of the team love to come along and often donate more than the ticket price because they care passionately about the animal welfare work that Woodside does.
