Students help poverty-stricken community this month

‘Beyond business as usual’ – the Leicester Castle Business School ethos that runs true through all it does. Professor Dana Brown believes in instilling ethical thinking in her students. She aims to create a new wave of businesspeople that act on ethical values for the better of their future companies and communities.

And she sets her students on this path as soon as an opportunity presents itself. Tomorrow, on January 19, some students who are enrolled on the school’s executive courses (for those already in employment studying at LCBS to further their knowledge and career) will be catching a flight to Phrao, Thailand.

The trip – called Grassroots Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Thailand – offers the opportunity to explore entrepreneurial activities among disadvantaged communities. It comes under the #DMUGlobal initiative which gives students international experiences that push boundaries.

The higher education provider has arranged for the students to explore and apply concepts learned on their courses and collaborate with the Warm Heart Worldwide foundation in Phrao. The community development group has an established track record of supporting grassroots entrepreneurship and innovation. It’s a volunteer run grassroots organisation that empowers rural Thai villagers through working with the community.

It started from nothing 10 years ago and now has 43 children living in the Children’s Homes who attend local schools, sponsoring another 35 children at a local, government boarding school, have 3 children away at vocational-technical high schools and 14 currently at university. LCBS Students will be helping to improve access to education, basic health services, jobs and sustainable incomes for the poorest people in the district.

With the help of the foundation, students will identify opportunities within the local communities and collaborate with stakeholders to co-design sustainable and commercially viable business solutions. Sounds like a great one to add to the CV!

Students will visit schools, a sustainable farm, environmental projects and tourist spots before arriving back on January 26.
