How to unlock your team's Olympic potential

Our 366 Team GB’ athletes are already doing us proud. Four year’s worth of hard work, determination and gruelling physical commitment is paying off. They are an inspiration. But whilst we cheer them on and wave our Team GB flags, we should also take the time to reflect. You don’t have to be an Olympian to be striving for a personal best. 

 

Every day you have the opportunity to help yourself and your team realise their potential and reach their goals. As it’s Olympic season, I want to take this chance to show you just how important physical activity can be to you and your team. 

 

This doesn’t mean you have to run 120 miles a week like Mo Farrah – but it does mean raising your heart rate above ‘resting’ for 150 minutes of every week. I’ll admit, this can be hard when you need your team to be sitting at their desks and working productively. So here are some tips and tricks to help you on your way.

 

Get time savvy…


Encourage your team to write down their daily tasks and responsibilities along with an estimation of how long they take. Now get creative. Could you re-prioritise their time to include some physical activity? Could you give your staff a physical activity time allowance? 

 

Make a lunch date…


A recent study found that 4 million UK workers never take a lunch break whilst a further 12 million have lunch at their desks. Encourage your staff to get out and about at lunchtime and you could save one sick day person. With an estimated annual saving of £2.8 billion across all UK business, that’s a lunch date worth keeping. 

 

Keep it simple...


You don’t need to build a gym. Using the stairs instead of the lift, moving key office items (bins, photocopiers, the kettle) away from people’s desks and holding a walking meeting all add up. It might not be the biggest calorie-burner, but it’s a step in the right direction. 

 

Get inclusive…


Some people might not want to join in office activity because they’re worried about their fitness or physical ability. Take everyone’s ability and fitness levels into account and plan accordingly. Walking based activities are an ideal way to get everyone involved or perhaps an office ping pong tournament.

 

Ask people what they want...


People don’t like being told what to do. If you take the time to ask you team what activities they’d like to join, they are far more likely to get – and stay – involved. A simple staff survey to gauge interest on what activities people would like to participate in is a good start.


Evidence suggests that adults who undertake regular physical activity are more productive at work and have a lower prevalence of sickness absence. Physical activity is also proven to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
