We love Veeno – and so will you!
At the authentic Italian restaurant Veeno, in the centre of Leicester’s exceptional Historic Quarter, Niche were able to experience Veeno’s speciality meats with the Delizia house platter; a fine selection of cold meats and cheeses along with the perfect wine to accompany the delicious variety of tastes. This was a light dining experience but was more than enough with the freshly baked bread from Altamura.
The setting was supremely modern Italian vibe with wine bottles stacked to show off an abundant collection. And it felt like a true home from home that its owners had transformed it into; two young guys who grew up in Italy and share a love for the Italian culture of Aperitivo. Aperitivo means nibbling and drinking in a relaxed and informal atmosphere with friends and family during the later afternoon and early evening and we definitely can understand why this is such a popular past time in Italy after experiencing it here in Leicester.
Our selection of cheeses included a smoked stretched curd cheese, one containing red chilli peppers and another with olives. The meats ranged in their cuts and added flavours. The Salame al Tartufo was a tiny and tasteful pork containing truffle; a sensational combination that came in just the right portion size and the Spianata Romana, boned pork shoulder seasoned with pepper, was tasty and very moreish.
One of the owners, Matt, let us sample a couple of wines before deciding one that suited us best. We were impressed to hear that all of Veeno’s wines are produced in the family vineyard in Sicily and that there is no middle man from the grape to our glass.
Veeno had a lovely ambience and was a perfect setting to catch up over a fine wine. Highly recommended.
