MELTON MOWBRAY CARE HOME WHISK UP TASTY TREATS FOR CUPCAKE DAY

July 10, 2017

Chefs from a Melton Mowbray care home whisked up the vital ingredients needed to help residents enjoy National Cupcake Day this week.

The Amwell, a residential, nursing, dementia and respite care home in Asfordby Road, which opened in January, joined thousands of other people up and down the country help raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Dementia became the leading cause of death in England and Wales last year with more than 61,000 people dying of the disease, largely due to an ageing population according to The Office for National Statistics.

Last year, the UK’s first National Cupcake Day raised more than £330,000 for dementia awareness, which could fund 11 PhD researchers for one year, giving them the opportunity to carry out potentially life-saving work.

Sarah Tongs, head chef at The Amwell, and her team baked a cupcake for each of its residents, family members and friends. The Amwell care home manager Chris Batty said: “We were very proud to be involved in our first National Cupcake Day. The Alzheimer’s Society undertake incredible work and, as a care home which offers dementia care, we wanted to do our bit by helping to raise money for such a worthy cause.

“Dementia can affect anyone and currently there is no cure. The more money that can be raised, the better we can make the world for those suffering with this disease today, while hopefully helping to find a cure for tomorrow.”
