Fighting sun damage - what the experts say

October 3, 2017

Your skin has been damaged this summer whether you know it or not. While there are lots of products out there to protect us from the suns damage, those pesky UVA and UVB rays still have their opportunity to get through to us when we don’t apply sun creams often enough, too sparingly, or not at all(!) causing often invisible destruction to our cells and all sorts of long-term cosmetic despair (not to mention serious medical problems).

What’s more worrying is that MediSkin Care’s Dr Sumit Virmani told us reflective sunlight can catch us out even when we’re indoors. He says the sun’s rays come through the windows bouncing off furniture, getting through our clothes, and even the fluorescents from indoor lighting could cause harm to our delicate skin.

Luckily, non-invasive treatments have come on leaps and bounds and Dr Virmani and his wife Dr Gunjan Bedi are experts in these. Both are GP’s and Dr Bedi has a high standing being called upon to speak at the UK’s premier aesthetic FACE exhibition. They recommend three top treatments to rescue our skin based on the concerns below – all of which are can be caused by sun damage.

Concern: sagging and texture irregularities to the face and/or body

Treatment: FORMA

How it works: using radio-frequency energy, the deep layers of the skin are contracted and the formation of new collagen is stimulated improving elasticity, and reversing the effects of sun damage, pain-free with no downtime.

Results: after initial slight redness lasting up to three hours, patients have reported that skin feels smoother and more defined with a reduction in wrinkles, and improved tone and texture.

Sessions required: weekly sessions are recommended over a six-week period.

Concern: age spots, spider veins, freckles, and skin irregularities

Treatment: LUMECCA

How it works: using photothermolysis, Lumecca is the most powerful intense pulsed light (IPL). The devise recognises skin pigmentation and destroys the cells causing irregularities comfortably.

Results: over the next 24-48 hours targeted areas darken. Around one week later, the pigmented lesions flake away improving tone and complexion.

Sessions required: results will be most visible after 1-2 weeks. Multiple photofacial treatments will improve the final result.

Concern: dark circles, texture and tone, stretch marks, acne scars, wrinkles, and hair loss

Treatment: CELLENIS PRP

How it works: a small sample of blood is taken from your arm, which then goes through a process to separate platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from the blood. Once injected to the desired area, regenerative molecules are released leading to the formation of collagen and elastin.

Results: slight redness, bruising and swelling may be experienced up to two days post-treatment. Visible results occur between 2-12 weeks and vary depending on general health, age, diet, smoking, and skin type.

Sessions required: three treatments 3-8 weeks apart. Maintenance treatments are recommended every 6-12 months.
