Leicester entrepreneur, Barrie Stephen, has dedicated himself to raising money for the city’s Woodside Animal Centre. The centre is Leicestershire’s independent branch of the RSPCA. They do not receive any centralised funding and so are dependent on donations from the public. They do incredible work caring for stray and unwanted pets, as well as recovering and returning injured wildlife.
Barrie Stephen, the head of a thriving empire of five hair salons in Leicestershire, has long felt the cause is close to his heart. “I am a real animal lover” said Barrie. “I have two black labradors and four cats at home, so animal welfare is really important to me. Being an ambassador for the Woodside Animal Centre means I can help to raise their profile, but what they really need is financial support from the public.
“I made a personal pledge in June 2015 to raise a minimum of £10,000 per year for the charity. I make sure that all of our team members at the salons really get involved with fundraising and supporting the centre. They did an incredible job this Christmas bringing pet food in to donate to the centre. I am really proud of them all.”
As well as encouraging clients and staff to bring pet food in for the centre this Christmas, Barrie has hosted a number of fundraising events to really bring in the big money. These included a charity dinner at Sapori Restaurant & Bar in June, just a stone’s throw away from the first salon he opened in Anstey, 21 years ago. In the Autumn a Halloween ball held at Hinckley Road’s North Bar & Kitchen saw more than £2000 raised.
The current total for #ProjectWoodside stands at £27,340 - giving Barrie six months to raise another £2660 to keep his fundraising pledge. “I’m confident we’ll get there” he smiles, “I know the people of Leicestershire love their pets as much as I do, so I’m sure they will dig deep. Plus, we’re planning plenty more fantastic events as fundraisers which will be the hot tickets of 2018!”
