Leicestershire auction house Introduces live bidding through website to reduce cost for buyers

March 11, 2019

Independent auction house Gildings in Market Harborough has expanded its services by offering live online bidding direct via the company’s website, reducing the cost of the process for customers.

Although potential buyers have been able to bid online since 2001, the launch of Gildings’ new website has coincided with the launch of live online bidding through a dedicated new platform hosted on the website. This means that bidders no longer have to bid via 3rd party platform or register beforehand.

The new service is also cheaper, with an internet surcharge of 3%, as opposed to 4.95% via a third-party portal.   As the bidding takes place through the Gildings’ website, this also makes the process simpler and less prone to glitches.

Mark Gilding, director and auctioneer of Gildings explains the reasons behind offering the service.

“Although live online bidding has been around in larger national and international auction houses for some time, it’s unusual for an independent auction house such as ours to offer this service directly through their website,” he comments.

“However, we feel it offers a far superior experience for potential bidders – and also makes live bidding a more cost-effective practice.”

Interested parties can bid live through their gildings.co.uk account once a valid debit card has been registered. On auction day, a 'Bid Live' button appears on the online catalogue enabling buyers to click through to the live bidding portal.

Previously, customers have used portals such as the-saleroom.com, however, the two systems will now sync together so that clients who register through gildings.co.uk are charged the reduced service fee. Although customers can still bid via third-party sites, most require pre-registration through these sites.

“Live online bidding is currently becoming an increasingly popular way to buy at auction and we anticipate that the new service will be well used but of course, people are still welcome to attend auctions in person and experience the excitement of the whole process,” adds Mark.

“However, for busy dealers or collectors, live bidding is a great option, especially now we have made it significantly cheaper to use. It enables us to appeal to real-time bidders worldwide across multiple platforms.”

Gildings is one of the Midlands’ leading auctioneers and valuers. Established by John Gilding with the first auction sales held in 1980 the company has a large client base nationally and internationally. It is now run by John’s sons Mark and Will.
