Leicester Riders Captain joins Hope Against Cancer as Ambassador

October 31, 2019

Leicester Riders captain Andy Thompson has become an ambassador for charity Hope Against Cancer. He joins former teammate Harrison Gamble as the second star athlete to represent the Leicester charity.

Thompson has already taken part in fundraising activities for Hope. He joined Gamble on the charity’s annual trek through the wilderness, Escape the Wild, for a three-day slog in the Lake District. The basketballers also attended the send-off for Hope’s bi-ennial Cycle Challenge - leading the cyclists out as they started their 340-mile journey around the North of England.

Thompson’s thoughts on the charity demonstrate how much he'll be committing to his new role: “Hope Against Cancer is an amazing charity. The work they do supporting and funding research into cancer treatment and prevention is incredible. They’re an amazing bunch and I’m very pleased to be a part of it all. Here’s to the future!”

Thompson’s 15+ year career has seen the Manchester-born star win an incredible amount of trophies. Many of those awards have come in his stretch with the Riders - for whom he’s been a welcome addition, having been named captain in 2018.

Gamble is to maintain his role as an ambassador to Hope Against Cancer - despite leaving Britain’s oldest basketball team to focus on his career outside of sports.

Starting in November 2018, Gamble has thrown himself into fundraising for Hope. He helped to sell Christmas jumpers for the ‘Deck the Halls with Hope and Holly’ campaign, and took part alongside his captain in Hope’s Escape The Wild outdoor challenge.

For the charity, Gamble was full of praise: “A huge thank you to Hope Against Cancer for a brilliant year. I’ve been lucky enough to do some amazing things – and meet some amazing people. I’d also like to say a huge thank you to The Riders Family for the support I’ve had since I announced I was leaving.”

Hope Against Cancer supports cutting-edge cancer research in the Leicestershire and Rutland area. Their CEO - Nigel Rose, said “Harrison and Andy are both brilliant ambassadors for Hope. Their willingness to jump into a challenge is truly inspirational. We count ourselves very lucky to have them on board.”
