School’s officially out at FX.

The network has decided not to move forward with a third season of English Teacher, the smart, sharp high-school sitcom created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez. The half-hour comedy will end after two seasons, with its 10-episode second run having premiered in September 2025. FX has not given a public reason for the cancellation.

What English Teacher Was About

Set in Austin, Texas, English Teacher followed Evan Marquez (Alvarez), a gay high school English teacher trying to juggle lesson plans, personal life, school politics and the nonstop demands of students and parents. Around him was a staff room full of beautifully chaotic colleagues:

  • Gwen (Stephanie Koenig), his best friend and fellow teacher

  • Principal Grant Moretti (Enrico Colantoni), permanently on the edge of a meltdown

  • Markie (Sean Patton), the blunt gym teacher

  • Rick (Carmen Christopher), the wildcard guidance counsellor.

The show was produced by FX Productions, with Alvarez joined by Paul Simms, Jonathan Krisel, Dave King, Kathryn Dean, Jake Bender and Zach Dunn on the executive producer team.

English Teacher Canceled by FX Despite Critical Acclaim

What makes the decision sting for fans is that English Teacher wasn’t a creative flop – far from it.

  • Season 1 earned a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes

  • Season 2 landed an even rarer 100% score

  • The series picked up nominations from the Critics Choice Awards, Film Independent Spirit Awards, WGA Awards and more.

Critics praised the show for being fast, weird, warm and deeply human – a series about faculty-room burnout and identity politics that somehow never felt like homework.

Still, strong reviews and awards buzz don’t always translate into the kind of audience numbers networks need. Industry reports note that English Teacher struggled to build a large mainstream viewership, even as it became a critical favourite and streaming darling.

Allegations, Scrutiny and FX’s Response

The show existed under a cloud almost from the start.

In early 2025, before FX officially announced the second-season renewal, Alvarez was accused of sexual assault by Jon Ebeling, a former collaborator from the web series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo. Ebeling alleged that the assault happened during that earlier production; Alvarez, through his attorney, denied the claims.

FX said at the time that it had reviewed the allegations presented by another outlet prior to the show’s launch and noted that Ebeling had never contacted the network directly. The company issued a brief statement and declined further comment.

The series went ahead with Season 2, but the accusations continued to follow it in coverage and online conversation. Several outlets have mentioned that the controversy, combined with modest ratings, likely made the show more vulnerable when FX looked at its comedy slate.

A Short, Sharp Run That Meant a Lot

Season 2 of English Teacher dug deeper into the “political minefield” of the American high school, with Evan trying to keep his job, his integrity and his sanity intact while navigating everything from curriculum wars to overreaching parents. Gwen, Markie, Rick and Principal Moretti were all back, rarely on the same page but always in Evan’s orbit.

In just 18 episodes, the show managed to build a very specific world: queer, chaotic, often painful but fundamentally hopeful about teachers who keep showing up even when the job feels impossible. For fans, the cancellation feels less like a tidy series finale and more like an abrupt bell ringing at the end of term.

There’s no word yet on another home for the series, but both seasons of English Teacher remain available to stream on FX’s platforms (and Hulu in the US), where its cult following is likely to keep growing even after the classroom doors have officially closed
